Magazine Front Cover Picture

For my magazine front cover, I will have to use a dominant central image. As my magazine is going to be an independent one, I will be using an image of my director on the cover. As my director is young, I have used a 21 year old as they were the most suitable subject that I could use
This picture is highly suitable for my cover as he is staring directly into the lens, he has his hands on his chin as if he is in deep thought and you can clearly see his face.
This photo is not so suitable as he is looking away from the camera and is not in a flattering pose.
This photo could be suitable as it is quirky and reflects on the age of my director.
This picture is not suitable as I took it as he was talking so it looks unprofessional.
This photo could be suitable as he is looking at the camera but his face is in shadow so the lighting is poor.
This photo is quite suitable for my cover as the lighting is good and I like how his head is on a slight slant which was a recurring theme I found in my research.
This photo is also quite suitable for my cover but less so than the one before although it is very similar.

Potential Magazine Layouts

I have sketched out four potential magazine layouts for my front cover. I have used other magazines such as Total Film, Sight & Sound, SFX, American Cinematographer and Empire as inspiration and have applied the information that I have researched for the magazine front cover.

This magazine layout was inappropriate for my chosen magazine. this is because this one was a bit too action like and mainstream like. There was too much going on for this cover and this cover was not suitable for my audience or theme of magazine.

I thought that this magazine cover was more appropriate as it is less in your face as the one before but it still has a quirky style to it which could match my independent magazine.

This one would not be appropriate to use for my magazine cover as the layout and design do not match my intended theme for my magazine. I also feel that the layout is not a particularly good one to use for any magazine in general such as having the masthead at the bottom of the page because in a shop, you tend to look at the top of the magazine for the masthead and I feel that this would just be skipped over and not draw people to it.

After considering my options, I thought that this would be the most appropriate cover to use. I feel like it looks the most authentic layout of a magazine such as mine, an independent British one which does not focus on the Hollywood blockbusters. This layout looks the most genuine and I feel like this is easy on the eyes but also attractive to the audience that I am reaching out for.

Cover Lines for my Magazine Front Cover

After researching what potential cover lines I could be using for my magazine front cover, I have chosen to use to talk about British films that are adaptations from books which will be Far From The Madding Crowd and Hamlet (III). These are both British books with a British cast and made in Britain which is ideal for my British based magazine.

For another cover line, I will use Guy Ritchie, a renowned British director who will be directing The Man From U.N.C.L.E. As he is one of Britain's most successful directors. Although it is not a British made film, there are plenty of big British stars in it such as Hugh Grant.

For a third cover line, I will use Ben Wheatley's new film set to release in August, High-Rise. He is a successful British director directing a British film with a British cast. As this ticks all of the boxes that I need for using a story for a cover line, I think that this is a perfect candidate for it.

Potential Logos for Production Companies

When I researched production logos, I noticed that there were multiple different versions of the logos. I have decided that I will compile a list of different logos so that I will be able to use the most appropriate ones for my teaser trailer and poster.

Cover Line research

I have researched films and film related topics which are happening at around the same time that I plan on releasing my film. I plan on publishing my magazine in July so I have had to research film news for June, July, August and September. Here are some ideas that I plan on using for my cover lines. Here are some potential cover line topics that I will be researching so that I can find the most appropriate ones.

  • Joe Wright directing Pan, set to release July 2015.
  • Toby Kebbel and Jamie Bell in the Fantastic Four reboot, set to release in August.
  • Guy Ritchie directing The Man from U.N.C.L.E, also set to release in August.
  • Emma Watson is starring in two films, Regression and Colonia in August and September.
  • Beyond Clueless is a film that was released in January so that means it would not be appropriate to use as a cover line.
  • Brooklyn is an American film to be released in November. Because it is an American film and being released in November, it will not be useful for my magazine cover.
  • Far From The Madding Crowd and Hamlet (III) are both books that are being adapted to films coming out in 2015.
  • Ben Wheatley, a renowned British director has High-Rise, filled with a British cast is set to release in August.
  • Kill Your Friends is to be released in September so it may not be best to use this for my cover lines.
  • London Road is a British film and is set to be release in June so I could potentially use it for my magazine front cover.

My Billing

After researching for all of my potential cast and crew members, I had chosen who I had wanted to be working on the film. After I had collected enough of the appropriate names, I used Photoshop and the Steel Tongs font to create an authentic looking billing. I will then be using this for my teaser trailer and my poster for my film.
